Bites & Sights begins in Nyboder, one of Copenhagen’s most charming and often overlooked neighbourhoods. These iconic yellow row houses were built in the 17th century to house the Danish Royal Navy, and they remain one of the city’s best-kept secrets, making them the perfect quiet starting point before the feast begins. Your guide will set the scene here, sharing the story of this unique corner of the city while you get your bearings and your appetite going. A bottle of water is included to keep you refreshed from the start.
From Nyboder, the tour moves into the green lungs of the city. Kongens Have (the King’s Garden) is Copenhagen’s oldest and most beloved royal park, wrapped around Rosenborg Castle. It’s the kind of place where locals sunbathe, kids play, and history hangs quietly in the air. Nearby, the magnificent dome of Marmorkirken (the Marble Church) dominates the skyline, and your guide will fill you in on the dramatic story behind its construction, a project so ambitious it sat unfinished for over a century.
A short stroll brings you to Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the Danish Royal Family. Four near-identical rococo palaces surround an octagonal courtyard, making it one of the most striking sights in the city. Your guide will make sure you understand exactly who lives where and why. This is also prime territory for a classic Danish pastry stop, where you’ll get your hands on a proper wienerbrød from one of the city’s finest bakeries, flaky, buttery, and the kind of thing that ruins all future pastries for you.
From the royal quarter, the tour winds down toward Nyhavn, the colourful 17th-century harbour that has become one of Copenhagen’s most recognisable images. Your guide will cut through the tourist surface to give you the real story of this neighbourhood, once a rough sailor’s district and now a beloved waterfront. It’s a great spot for photos and a natural pause before the tour’s centrepiece food stop.
Lunch is a proper smørrebrød, the open-faced rye bread sandwich that defines Danish lunch culture. Your guide will walk you through what makes a great smørrebrød and why Danes are so fiercely proud of it. It’s a moment to slow down, eat well, and let the city’s food culture sink in.
No food tour of Copenhagen would be complete without a taste of Danish liquorice, one of the country’s most unexpected culinary exports and the kind of thing that converts even the most sceptical first-timer. You’ll get to try a piece and hear the story behind an obsession that has taken the world by storm.
The tour then takes you past Christiansborg Palace, seat of the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Prime Minister’s office, all under one roof. Your guide will share the dramatic royal and political history that has unfolded here over the centuries, including some of the stories that didn’t make it into the textbooks.
A stop at one of the city’s finest coffee roasteries follows, a Copenhagen institution known for exceptional, no-nonsense coffee. Then it’s up to Rundetårn (the Round Tower), one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, for a sweeping view over the rooftops of the old city.
The tour wraps up in style at one of Copenhagen’s most celebrated covered food markets, a place locals genuinely love and visitors never want to leave. Here you’ll find a curated cheese tasting, traditional frikadeller (Danish meatballs), and if there’s room, something sweet to finish. Your guide will make sure you know exactly what to look for if you want to return on your own.
