Guest Story

A Taste of Time: Eating My Way Through Copenhagen’s Story

I’ve always believed that the best way to understand a place is through its food — and after this tour, I’m convinced Copenhagen agrees. I joined Yummy Copenhagen expecting some pastries and a smørrebrød or two. What I got was a full-on edible history lesson, served with laughter, stories, and the kind of moments that linger long after the last bite.

We started in the lively Torvehallerne market, where locals picked out fresh fish and flowers while we gathered around our guide. She welcomed us like an old friend, casually dropping culinary insights and local humor as we sampled our first bites — earthy, chewy, deeply Danish. The flavors weren’t just tasty; they had context. Each dish had a past, a purpose, a personality.

What made this tour stand out wasn’t just the food (though yes, everything was delicious), it was the way each stop layered more meaning onto what we were tasting. At one place, we were nibbling on something inspired by the New Nordic movement, and at the next, we were standing outside an old workers’ tavern with smørrebrød so beautiful it felt wrong to eat it — but we did. And it was heaven.

As we walked from one spot to the next, our guide kept the group energized and engaged. One moment we were learning how Danish immigrants helped reshape the city’s food scene, the next we were debating the proper way to eat a “pibe.” At some point, someone handed me a walking beer, and we all toasted to how well Denmark seems to combine efficiency, beauty, and butter.

The smørrebrød stop was a standout. Tucked into a spot that felt like the lovechild of history and hipsterdom, we were served layers of rye, herring, herbs, eggs, and pickles arranged so neatly it felt like art. As we ate, our guide shared the dish’s cultural roots — how it was tied to work, family, and even politics. Suddenly, I wasn’t just eating lunch; I was participating in a Danish ritual.

And then came the pastry. I had told myself I wouldn’t fall for a cliché, but the moment we cracked open a flaky, golden wienerbrød from a tucked-away bakery, I knew resistance was pointless. It was the pastry moment — the kind that makes you smile mid-chew. We talked about childhood treats, comfort food, and whether Danes really eat this well every day. (Spoiler: many do.)

Throughout the tour, we weren’t rushed. We walked, tasted, laughed. We learned strange local phrases and made connections over our shared joy of food. It felt like being invited into someone’s kitchen — warm, generous, and full of flavor.

By the end, I didn’t just feel full. I felt connected. To the city. To its stories. To my fellow travelers. And to this beautiful way Danes seem to use food not just to feed, but to gather.

This wasn’t just a food tour. It was a delicious crash course in Danish identity — and I can’t imagine a better way to spend an afternoon in Copenhagen.
